One person helping one person.

Such a simple concept, right? But as busy, time-starved small business owners, it’s something I think we forget way too often.

My business coach, he lives on a boat, and he’s been spending the past month in St. Augustine. And every day, he’d walk over the bridge into the city, and he saw this man sitting on a bench, who he kind of thought might be homeless. And so, one morning he walked up to him, and just started a conversation and said, “Are you hungry?” And the man said, “Yes.” So, my business coach gave him some bagels, started a conversation with them, and then every day for the next 30 days, the relationship grew. And it turns out that this is not your stereotypical homeless man. He doesn’t drink, doesn’t do alcohol. He has a very interesting backstory. And the situation was he lost all of his ID. He didn’t have a driver’s license, a birth certificate, anything that could help him get a job. And he wanted to work. He wanted to get back on his feet again.

So, my business coach helped him do that, helped him get his birth certificate. Now he’s got his driver’s license. He’s going to start writing a book, telling his story about homeless people. And it’s just such an awe-inspiring story, which inspired me to talk about this concept of one person helping one person, because it just … sure, when something catastrophic happens, a hurricane, a mining accident, which was just in the news, whatever it is, some natural disaster. Sure. Yeah, we pull together and we help. But could you do something simple every single day to pay it forward?

We might come closer to balancing the Budget if all of us lived closer to the Commandments and the Golden Rule.

Today is actually my neighbor’s 71st birthday. And I’m going to go to the store and get a special big cupcake with his name on it. Now, this man, he had a brain aneurysm two years ago, and he really hasn’t been doing very well. And he doesn’t have family nearby to help take care of him. So, I’m so excited to just go sit down, and share some stories, and talk with him, and make his birthday special.

My sister, she was actually at the beach, and she told me that she was waiting in line for this doughnut store that’s sells warm doughnuts. And the man in front of her, by the time he got to the front of the line, realized that he did not have his wallet. And he’s like, “Oh, my god! My kids are going to kill me if I don’t come back with the warm doughnuts!” So, my sister handed him 20 bucks, and said, “Here. The doughnuts are on me.” And the guy was like, “No, no. Let me get your email. Let me get your address. I’ll send it back to you.” And my sister was like, “You know, what’s 20 bucks? It’s entertainment. My kids will go blow it in the arcade. I’d rather see you and your family enjoy these doughnuts.”

So, little simple things that you can do every day, one person to one person. You would be surprised what those little things can do.

So, forget all about that negativity that you see, and hear, and read about in the news. Do something simple to do good, be good, get good.

What do you think?

Bye-bye.
