Gross is for vanity. Net is for sanity.

Hey, everybody. I just finished writing another chapter in my upcoming book, Small Business Marketing Made EZ. That’s E-Z. You see, a lot of small business owners struggle with marketing, but I’m here to tell you that it’s easy, and in this book, I lay out an action system that you can literally do just that. Put it into action. I just finished writing the chapter about I, which stands for investing, investing in your marketing, and this is an area that a lot of small business owners struggle with because they don’t know what to measure. What I’m about to say to you, I want you to write it on a piece of paper, stick it on your wall, and look at it every single day. This is so important.

See, most small business owners focus on the gross. How many sales did they make, or even if they’re outsourcing their marketing, they may be looking for somebody who promises to bring them in, let’s say, a million dollars of business. The thing is that what they didn’t tell you is that by investing in their program, it’s going to cost you two million dollars to make the million. That’s a bad investment. Then there’s vanity metrics. You know what I’m talking about. How many likes do you have? Well, woo hoo, you’ve got 300 new likes last week, but can you deposit those in the bank? Remember, gross is for vanity, net is for sanity.
