Hey everybody. Small business Stacey here, and I’ve saved the best one for last, because when you go to New York City, you have to eat, right? There’s such amazing food there, and if you’re going to do the typical tourist thing, you’re going to go to a deli. So that’s what Digital Dave and I did, and we had a come to Jesus moment, literally. Jesus was in this deli, and he arrived at our table. When our food arrived, look what arrived with it; a piece of toast with Jesus. Wow, now I knew that I was going to be safe and have a great time in the city.

Lesson on Marketing From The Big City - Miracle MarketingThis was a brilliant marketing strategy, actually by TBS, to promote an upcoming show that they had called Miracle Workers, and it’s about these angels who have to come to earth and are on a mission to get two humans to actually love each other. So the brilliant marketing is by tapping into a deli where all they had to do was give out a piece of Jesus toast to promote this upcoming show. It got our attention. We had never heard of this show before. But yet, out on the streets, everybody was like handing out fliers, “Here, come to my show tonight.” “Here, do my tour.” “Here, ride my bus.” And where did those go? Right into the circular file, the trash can. Right? Because it’s not memorable.

This was brilliant marketing because it was just … it tapped right into the theme of what the show is about and it got your attention. I’m here taking pictures of it. I’m going to share it with my friends. I’m doing a Marketing in Two Minutes or Less on it. And ironically enough, after we had our Jesus toast, as we were walking around the city, we sort of saw these pictures on billboards and bus stops as well, but we never would have noticed it before.

So think about how you can do something different and unique; maybe a piece of toast with your name on it. It’s all about tying in with the local marketing. I have a client who’s an electrician, and we’re working with him on his local marketing, and one of the things that we’re going to be doing is giving giveaways. So when the technicians leave, we’re going to have a magnet, actually with some kitchen conversions … measurement conversions on it so people will always have it on their refrigerator. But we’re also going to have like a treasure chest. So think of when you go to the dentist, right? And you’re a kid, and you get to go in the treasure chest and pick a toy. So that’s what we’re going to implement for this electrician with a little treasure chest. So if they have kids, they can go in and pick a toy. We’re going to have like stress balls and coloring books. Or if they have a pet, we’re going to have like little dog bones for the dogs, all branded with the company’s name and logo.

So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.

Jesus Christ

Now, the funny thing about it is, it’s not even about the electrical services, right? People are going to be so wowed and impressed, and love these little toys, they’re going to leave a great review and they’re going to tell their friends about it, “Oh, my electrician left me this little thing of a light bulb full of candy.” Right? All right.

So looping this back to Jesus, how can you use the concept of Jesus toast in your marketing so that people talk about you? You don’t have to spend a lot of money doing it. This was a brilliant marketing strategy by the folks at TBS, I got to say, to get people aware and talking about their show. I thought it was brilliant. What do you think? Leave me a comment below, and out of all of these five lessons learned from the big city, what was your favorite? I’d love to know.
