Why Repurposing Content Just Makes Sense

There comes a time where every website or blog owner gets to the point where they get “content block” which essentially means you struggle for ways to create new, helpful and unique content. “Digital Dave” in this episode lays out the concept, when you eventually get to this point, that you simply start to repurpose content you already have created.

Episode Transcript

This is something that as time goes on and you continue to build out your blog or your website, you’ll start to get to the point where you get writer’s block or content maker’s block, whatever you want to call it. And you start to want to figure out ways to take the content that you are creating and make it into different types of content, and this is called re-purposing.

We do this a lot. It is a great way to start with one thing and end with another.  I’m going to give you two examples today of repurposing content where the first way we started with an article that was written for one of our blogs that the purpose of it was to help promote products, and we turned it around, and we actually used the tool to turn this into a video as well. So, we repurposed the underlying text of the content into a nice step-based story video.

I’m gonna walk through this real quick and show you method one, which was … we wrote this article on … You Can Measure A Hawaiian Shirt By The Quality Of Its Buttons, and it talks about coconut shell buttons, and why they’re so great. And you come down through the article and you find this video. What we had done is we took the content, and we took the highlights of the content and made it into a storyboard. So, I’m gonna go ahead and play this real quick. I’m going click the play button.

This was about a one-minute video, and I’m not gonna play the whole thing. You get the point, as it’s just walking through some of the highlights of the text, and we turned this into a nice storyboard video that we posted on YouTube that’s getting some pretty good feedback on YouTube.

Why Repurposing Content Just Makes Sense

Now, another method is to go the opposite way, and this is our own website/blog which is for the Small Biz Marketing Specialist. In this particular case, what we do is, we start with a video. We create a video of some type of content. In this particular case, it’s a series that we had put together, which is basically “Your Online Front Door, The 16 Elements That You Should Have on Your Front Page of Your Website“. This particular one was element number seven, and it was regarding how to put video on your homepage, particularly what is the importance of having a video on your homepage.

So, this was a video that we created, and from the video itself … and I’ll play just a clip of this video. This is pretty long. Here, you can see … I’m gonna play this and we’ll watch a couple seconds of it.

“Your online front door, and the 16 elements you must have in place, element number seven. Today, we’re talking about element number seven, and that is using video on your homepage. Video is so powerful. It’s a great way to share content as well as your story. If you wanna learn more about how you can use video in your marketing, go to smallbizmarketingspecialist.com/episode18. Let’s look at some ways of how you can use video on your homepage. There’s different ways that you can incorporate video into your …”

Why Repurposing Content Just Makes Sense

Okay, so here you can see a video that we created that is posted on YouTube as part of a series called Marketing in Two Minutes or Less, and this was part of that series, on the 16 elements you should have on your homepage of your website. We actually took this video, and we took out the audio and edited it a bit, and turned it into a podcast. So, this was part of a podcast that we post to Google Play as well as iTunes.

In addition to that, we actually had the video transcribed into the text within the video, which becomes an article that we embed on our website here. Now, this is not a full transcript of this video because this one was a little bit long, but some of them we do transcribe into the full text of the video, which becomes a very nice piece of content, an article that we can use to put on our website as well as SEO that particular topic.

So, you can see how you can take just a single piece of content, the time we spent to build the video, and turn it into a podcast with the audio, and then actually transcribe that into an article that we post on our website. The nice thing about this for our users is that, when they come here (to our website), they get to choose their preferred method of how to review this particular content. Some people like video, some people like audio, some people are on the run and want to listen to it in their car (podcast), and some people like to read. So, we’ve actually taken a single piece of content and turned it into three-in-one.

So, these are two great ways to repurpose content. You’ll find this is really helpful as you start to build out your website and your blog. This is Digital Dave. This is the end of this episode, and we’ll catch you on the next one. Have a great day.
