The Most Important Email You’ll Ever Send

Did you know that the first email someone receives once they join your list will have the highest open rate of any email you’ll ever send?

Knowing that, wouldn’t you want to fill it with the best content and most clear call to action ever?

Rather than use the generic welcome email that comes with most email marketing platforms (I use Constant Contact for mine and my clients), I recommend turning that off and switching to an autoresponder – your design choices are greater and you can have a different welcome response for each of your lists.

Need some inspiration for your welcome emails? Here’s 4 great examples to get your creative juices flowing.

1. Kate Spade

Kate Spade uses a simple — but effective — tactic with their welcome emails: They say “Thank You” in big, bold lettering. And by placing that “Thank You” on an envelope, Kate Spade recreates the feeling of receiving an actual thank-you letter in the mail. (The 15% off discount code doesn’t hurt either.)

2. Fab

There’s a lot going on this welcome email from Fab but they make it work by making the email look great – the design is really beautiful – and using upbeat copy. Just look at some of the words they use:

  • “discover fun, colorful products”
  • “Smiles. Guaranteed.”
  • “We promise you will love your Fab purchase.”

Overall, it’s a nice experience and there are a number of ways to engage with the site directly from this email.

 3. David’ Bridal

The David’s Bridal email above features a great introductory message. It thanks new subscribers for making the company part of their wedding day. You can write something straightforward like, “Welcome to our email list,” or “Thanks for signing up to get our emails.” There’s no right or wrong way to welcome new guests, just make sure it’s conversational and fits your company’s voice.

 4. Wistia

They greet you in a really nice way, and I just love the gif image that they put in the email. I haven’t seen anyone else do this before. Gets attention.

It looks really cool to see that there are people who are enthusiastic and passionate about what they do.

I like that they take the time to survey you to learn more about your interests and needs (also the first company I’ve seen that does that in the welcome message).
