Here’s the transcript:

It’s not my job to remember to do business with you.

Hey everybody. This week, I was having some work done in my house and my kitchen is a disaster and I said to Digital Dave, I said, “I’m not cooking, let’s go out and get something to eat.” He’s like, “Sure, what would you like?” So I was thinking that I was in the mood for a really good sandwich. Now, that may not sound anything special. What’s the big deal about that? The big deal is that normally I would say, “Let’s go to Heckman’s.” You see Heckman’s is the local deli in our area that has awesome sandwiches. The kind that you see in New York that are piled high with meat. They’re just delicious bread, and the staff are awesome. Our whole family loves this place and we used to go at least once a month. We were a regular customer.

Finally! A Marketing Plan Just For You

Just imagine what your business will look like in the next 30 days when you pick the perfect marketing plan for your business

They did a great job of marketing. They would send us oversized postcards. Something similar to this, that were actually personalized, had my name on it, even very targeted, they would say, “Hey, last time you came in you ate the Abraham sandwich, how about next time try the Benjamin and we’ll even give you 20% off.” Very good marketing. The last time our family went in there they told us that they weren’t going to be doing those promotions anymore. That they were moving to this new, great, state of the art technology and it was only going to be on the phone. Some kind of app. We downloaded it but I’d never heard from them since. They haven’t reached out, they didn’t give me a reason to do business with them. It’s not my job to remember them. It’s their job to remember me.

Now, my guess is that the business owner had a very cheap money mindset and was looking at the cost perhaps, of doing direct mail in sending out these postcards. Something like this may cost 30 cents if they do them in bulk. My family would spend an average of over $30 every time we went in and we would go in at least once a month. But as I said, we haven’t been there in months and now they’ve lost our business, they’ve lost me as a customer because I am not going to go out of my way to remember them and do business with them.

Today’s marketing lesson, actually there were many, you should probably go back and watch or listen to this again. But today’s message is, it’s not your customer’s job to remember to do business with you, it’s your job to stay front of mind and give them a reason to come back and spend their money with you.
