Hi, I’m Stacey Riska, owner of a coffee and smoothie business in the Washington, DC area.

Now, a coffee and a smoothie, not the most exciting things in the world, right? After all, you can get a coffee or a smoothie anywhere. Really, the only thing that differentiates it is price, but me being a small business owner in the Washington, DC area, I did not want to build a business that was based on competing on price.

I needed a strategy that was going to bring me customers who were willing to pay a premium price for my products and services.

Now, when I was starting to grow my business, I looked at Groupon as a marketing strategy to bring more customers into the door. Let me share with you what I did in my coffee and smoothie business.

Now, I could have run that typical $20 for $10 deal, but what I did instead was I created an experience, an experience based on catering packages starting at $575 because you could have a smoothie or you could have the Ultimate Hawaiian Getaway Without a 12 Hour Flight where a tikitender dressed in a bright Hawaiian shirt who will greet you with “Aloha!” stands behind a tiki bar blending gourmet all-natural fresh fruit smoothies topped off with a Hawaiian parasol. Now, which would you rather have, the smoothie or the “vacation in a cup?” It’s a no brainer, right?

Now, people may be willing to pay $5 for a smoothie, but I was charging $575 for catering packages and price was totally taken out of the equation all because I was no longer a commodity. I took a commodity, the smoothie, and transformed it into an experience. That’s what I encourage you to do. Whatever business you’re in, transform it into an experience that wows and delights your customers so that price is totally taken out of the equation.
