Why I had to turn a potential client down. This week’s lesson in Marketing in 2 Minutes or Less.

Hey everybody. “Small Business Stacey” here. I just got off the phone with a potential marketing client that I actually had to turn away and realized that it had a very powerful marketing lesson, so I’m going to share that with you today. This is a potential client that I was really so excited to have the opportunity to work with.

It was a person who was starting a camp for aspiring entrepreneurs. Young kids who would go to summer camp to learn how to run their own business. Something I could be really excited about. She wanted to do a whole rebranding and redevelopment of her website, which I certainly had the talent and expertise to help her with, but she started dictating to me how she wanted it done.

She said, “I want you to interview me for two hours and take my backstory and my history and why I’m creating these camps and write the whole site all about that.” I was like, “No. This camp isn’t about you. It’s about those kids, and why and how they would benefit from being aspiring entrepreneurs.” She was just so adamant about it being about her. The marketing lesson is that your website and your marketing is not about you. I actually had to politely turn this potential marketing client away because she was so adamant about her site being about her.

Today’s marketing lesson is, is that your marketing, your website, your copy … Yes, you may have a great backstory and be so passionate and it’s the reason why you have your business today, but the marketing and the pictures and the text and everything that comes across in promoting it needs to be about the customer. What’s in it for them? What are they going to get? what’s the benefit and the end result? Why would they want to go to your summer camp experience? That’s what you need to answer in your marketing.
