The University of Maryland and more money in your small business pocket. What do they have to do with each other?

That’s what we’re talking about today in Marketing in Two Minutes or Less.

Hey everybody. “Small Business Stacey” here. I just moved my son into my alma mater, University of Maryland. Go Terps. But what does that have to do with you as a small business owner?

Well, there’s a lot that you can learn about colleges and universities. You see, college is a business. My son went to buy his books and when he sent me the bill, I nearly had a heart attack, $400.

Not for all of his books, $400 for one book. $400 for one book. It’s nothing more than words printed on a piece of paper, right? I mean, it’s not gold plated. It’s not signed by a celebrity. As soon as he’s done with it at the end of the semester, he can burn it and it’s not really worth anything. Well, maybe not.

You see, that $400 book is not just a textbook. It’s an investment in my son’s future.

He started a game development company and he knows that going to The University of Maryland and studying computer science is going to give him the education that he needs, so that his game development company can be a huge success. To me, it’s an investment in his dreams and goals. It’s not just a textbook and I will happily pay the $400.

It’s a lesson I learned in my coffee and smoothie business where I was charging $5 for a smoothie, but I quickly realized that I could get more money in my pocket by positioning it as a vacation in a cup and offering catering packages called The Ultimate Hawaiian Getaway without a 12-hour flight starting at $575.

When you position it not as a smoothie, but as a vacation in a cup, people want it. It’s the end result. It makes them look great as the host having a party or if they’re doing it in their office, it makes them look really good. At that point, price doesn’t matter.

So, that’s what you need to do in your business, not be a textbook, not be a smoothie. You’ll find that if you reposition it and repackage it and position it so that the customer is getting what they want, they will happily pay the money.
