Here’s the transcript:

If you’re a small business owner, who wants control and freedom, and doesn’t want to be strapped to their business, marketing automation is a great tool to help you accomplish that, but marketing automation can go wrong. Now, I like to go out and join a lot of people’s list to see what they are doing in automation and so many of them get it wrong. See, they may offer a free report, or an e-book, or something where they’re able to capture my name and contact information, but here’s what happens. They are so excited that they’ve got my name, that they immediately send me an email.

Now, here’s what I do. I put in my first name as Shithead. So when they send me my first email, it says, “Hey there Shithead.” Well, guess what? You just lost me because you did not take the time to check your data and you’re relying too much on marketing automation. You see, it can be a great tool, but it’s just that, it’s just a tool. You still need to be able to manage, check, and assure that your data is good.

The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Now, when we manage our clients’ data, even though we may be using marketing automation, we won’t say, “Dear blank,” on the first run. That’s because we want somebody to look at it. Somebody could have typed their name in all lower case. We want to have that assurance that the data quality is great and, for one, it doesn’t say, “Shithead.”

So think about that when you’re putting your marketing automation in place. It’s okay to take an extra step and have some human intervention.
