Hey, everybody. Yes, it’s the middle of winter, and baby, it is cold outside. That’s why I’m bundled up in my Maryland sweatshirt today. But that doesn’t mean that your small business needs to go in hibernation mode just because it’s cold outside. There’s lots of things that you can do to heat up your sales during the winter. Let me give you three examples of companies that are doing this really well.
One is my coffee and smoothie business. Yes, we are very seasonal, and in the summer, we are cranking out smoothies like crazy, but in the winter, things do slow down. What I’ve done is I focused on adding new products that will give my customers a reason why to do business with me. We’ve added coffee, espresso, and hot chocolate. For example, in January, a lot of companies are doing their meetings. They’re setting their goals and their business plans, so I put together packages to caffeinate those meetings. In February, it’s still cold outside, but there’s Valentine’s Day, so during that week, we do Ghirardelli hot chocolate bars, something sweet for staff appreciation.
I have a client who’s a realtor who has really leveraged the winter market. Now, whereas most people will wait until the spring, where it’s the typical spring hot real estate market, my client has taken advantage of winter, because it’s actually a great opportunity for home buyers to snag a home at a lower price, because one, there’s less competition… people are not searching for homes, and two, usually, if the home has been on the market for a while, they’re going to be more likely and eager to sell that home. It’s a win-win for everybody. And, especially where she’s located, up in Boston, where it’s really competitive she has found a way to differentiate herself.
Another example is a roofing company. Now, most people, when they’re thinking about replacing the roof, will wait until it’s warmer, but a roofing company can make fantastic deals with prospective clients because they need to keep their labor busy year round. I’ve seen many roofing companies package together deals like “Well, just pay for my labor cost, and we’ll give you 50% off material,” or, “Buy a roof from us now, and we’ll do the gutters for free.”
There are lots of ways that you can leverage the winter market to heat up your sales. What are you going to do? I’d love to hear from you. Leave me a comment below.
