Do you have a compelling message?

I was at the grocery store the other day and there was a long line so I struck up conversation with the person behind me and I said, what do you do for a living? And they said, oh, I’m a jeweler and you could see how excited they were just to tell me that. And I was thinking to myself, well, woo hoo, there’s eight million other jewelers in the world, what makes you so special? Now, this is what you need to be thinking about in your small business because when you tell your customers, clients and patients what you do, they’re thinking the same thing. Well, woo hoo, what do I care? You see the only thing those customers, clients and patients think about is themselves, their problems and who can solve them.

Great marketers see potential customers as real people. They create campaigns that appeal to their, wants, needs and desires.

If you can rework your unique selling proposition to address that, you will have a boatload of business to keep you busy. So instead of this jeweler saying I’m a jeweler, they could’ve said, I create custom pieces of work that are as unique and original to the person wearing them. See, that makes it sound really special. It’s not just a typical piece of jewelry that you may go and pick up for five bucks at the mall. This is a custom crafted piece of art, as unique and special as the person wearing it. So I love this USP because it addresses the who. They’re getting really specific in who they serve. So I want you to do the same thing. Instead of saying, I’m a blank, I want you to create your unique selling proposition so that it addresses who you serve, what problem you solve and why you are the best solution for it. That is your compelling message. Leave me a message below on what you come up with.

Good point. It makes me think twice about what I saw to people now. I’ll have to come up with a unique way of saying I own a Dry Cleaning Company. 🙂
