Episode Transcript:

Stacey: Hi, I’m “Small Business Stacey”.

Dave: I’m “Digital Dave”.

Stacey: Where marketing …

Dave: … meets technology.

Hello everyone, this is Digital Dave on Where Marketing Meets Technology, and today, we’re going to talk about content. One of the questions that Stacey and I get asked a lot is that after you’ve been doing this for a while, like maintaining a blog for a period of time, one of the things that happens is you start to run into … I call it writer’s cramp, where you’re stuck with “How do I find new, great content to create and put on my website to drive traffic?” And I want to share with you seven different types of content that were put together by our friends over at DigitalMarketer, and these seven types of content are really highly recommended for putting together content that will drive traffic to your website.

We’ll start off by just kind of reading what these seven are, and we’re going to actually take a look at each type individually; we’re going to look at an example. So the first type of content is the content aggregator, and the content aggregator is simply a post where you are not really writing the content, you’re actually maybe going out and finding content on other blogs, or maybe you’re using something like a BuzzSumo, where there’s a lot of popular content, and putting together pieces of that content into a new piece of content, thus a content aggregator.

If you look at our screen here, this is Survival Life. This is actually their example from DigitalMarketer of a great piece of content that is a content aggregator. What they’ve done here is they’ve come up with the 20 survival gardening plants for spring. So that sounds pretty enticing, and all they’ve really done is gone through and put together, from probably different posts out there, 20 different types of plants that you can plant in the spring, 20 different types of plants. And so they just grabbed the content and kind of put a description of each image that they put together into one big post, and that is simply the content aggregator.

Now, the second type of content that you may want to consider is called the crowdsourced post, and the crowdsourced post … Really, what you do is you find a group of people that are experts, and you send them all the same question, and you ask them to provide you with an answer to that question, and then you just take the answers and aggregate those answers into a post. And again, DigitalMarketer gives a great example of this, and this is on their own site. It is the 32 split testing ideas from four of the world’s leading conversion experts. Wow, sounds pretty interesting to me, if you want content that converts. This is just a great example of how they sent this out, and they aggregated it, and showed the people individually, their pictures on there, and what their response was, with some images, to the questions that they ask. And they just aggregate this into one long post and publish it, and this is a great way to drive traffic, particularly since these experts will probably help share this on social media, since they were involved in creating that post.

Now, the third type of content that you may want to consider is called the embed reactor. This is not a nuclear reactor, it’s the embed reactor, and in this post, you want to basically react to some type of a topic within the post. We’ll look at their example here: “Are You Using The Ideal Length of a Blog Post, Facebook Update, Email Subject Line, and 12 more?” So what they’ve actually done is they have … They’re just reacting to each individual piece of this content. They’re giving you the content, and then they’re reacting and giving you their opinion, or their reaction to that content. So this is known as the embed reactor. You can see they’ve mixed some images in here. It’s a wonderful post. I love it, lots of colors and stuff in here to really make it stand out.

Now, the fourth type of post is the interview post, and this is one that we inevitably use a lot in general, because we do a blog. What an interview post is is that it’s a text that you’ve just kind of taken from a video, and show as the conversation progresses throughout that audio or video. Again, a great example is if you do a podcast, you’re going to want to transcribe that into text that follows along with the actual podcast. They give you an example here called “Talking Salesmanship: John Carlton on the Art of Feeding a Hungry Crowd,” and you can see here where they start into the actual topic, and as they go through it, they just … It’s in a conversational style, where they’re just literally almost replicating the conversation as it’s being spoken. So that’s the interview post.

The next post is called the quote post, and in this post, you find quotes from experts about a particular topic, and provide a short reaction or analysis of each of the quotes. Now, this is kind of like the embed reactor, to a degree, only the difference here is that you’re going out and getting experts to give you the quote, you’re getting experts’ quotes, and then reacting to the actual quotes themselves. I actually particularly like this one. Especially if you are into inspirational content, you could certainly write about inspiration, and here’s a perfect example: “The 20 Marketing Insights That Inspired Us in 2013.” Here’s the quote right here, and there’s the reaction, so you can see they do this multiple times, using the images as the quote, and then a brief reaction to each of those quotes, and they come up with a nice piece of content that, again, will probably get a lot of social shares, just because it’s quotes from famous people or experts.

Now, the next type of post, number six, is the stat round up, and now, the stat roundup is kind of what it sounds, is you are taking a post, you know, content, and then essentially turning that into statistics, some type of a chart, maybe, or an infographic. People love infographics, and people love statistics in content, and this is one of the types of posts that will drive traffic to your website and get attention from the search engines. So let’s take a look at an example of this one. This one is on HubSpot: “15 Blog Optimization Stats You Need to Tweet … Stat.” So there you go. So what they’ve done here is they have given you the 15 stats here. They do not really illustrate it here, but they did lay this out as kind of like a table of the different stats. Very simple to put together, and you could do it just as a table like this, and that’s perfectly fine. Infographics work really, really well and are shared quite often on other media.

Number seven, and the final piece of content, and one that I particularly like to use, is the YouTube cut-up, and what the YouTube cut-up is … What really works very well with the YouTube cut-up are how-to or DIY videos, where you basically outline what the steps are of whatever they’re having you do. That’s one great YouTube cut-up content. You don’t have to use just the DIY or the how-to videos; you could do this certainly with any YouTube video. But an example of this is over here on the DIY Projects site, and this is called “Cute DIY Rug for Home Furnishing Tutorial,” and this is the DIY rag rug. And what they’ve done here is just simply taken some screenshots, possibly from the video itself, and walk through the steps in text of how to make this particular rug. You can see they go through each step from the video, and then later on, of course, you’re going to want to embed the video at the end so they can actually watch the video if they want to. And this is the YouTube cut-up, a great piece of content to add to your site that will … It will drive traffic.

Now, I want to ask a favor of everybody. We really hope that … We want to make sure that we’re giving you content that’s of value, and that if we do, we want to ask you a favor. I mean, we’re doing this for free. We do want to make you a small biz marketing wiz; that’s what this is all about. We want to ask you a favor that if you think our content is good and you like it, if you would go over to our YouTube channel and leave a comment, and/or you could potentially subscribe to our channel, that would be great. Or if you are listening to our podcast, and you’re on iTunes, if you would do us the honor of giving a nice review, preferably a good review, that would be awesome, and we would really appreciate that. So again, thanks, everybody, and we’ll catch you on the next episode of Where Marketing Meets Technology.
