A lot of small business owners come to me asking for help with their social media marketing. They find that they’re struggling getting more likes, more followers, and especially engagement with their social media postings. The challenge is that when I look at their social media channels, they are not posting engaging content. They’re not providing something that people want to talk about.

I had a prospective client call me yesterday to look at their social media, and they were posting tons and tons of really valuable content that they felt was important. It was sort of like the chest-beating, “I’m great at this, we’re great at that, we’ll do this, we’ll do that,” but that’s not what people are going to talk about. You get people to talk about you by posting pictures and asking engaging questions and getting them involved in your business.

In my coffee and smoothie business, we do this by taking pictures and posting them out on social media and tagging the people and the companies that we work with. They love it. They then share it, which gives us additional engagement and visibility, and the whole point of social media is to be social, right?

If you want more engagement on social media, you really have to answer these two questions. One is, are we providing a product or a service that’s worth talking about, and two, how can we then create content that shows the experience that we provide so that it’s worthy of sharing? If you can answer those two questions, you will have great success on social media.
