Your online front door and the 16 elements you must have in place. Element number eight.

Today, we’re talking about element number eight, which is making sure that the home page addresses a list of problems that you solve.

When someone comes to your home page, they are probably looking for something pretty specific. They have a need or a problem that they’re looking to have solved. So it’s really important that on your home page there’s a list of the problems and the solutions that you solve. Let me show you how you can do that.

So many different types of people could be hitting your home page. You can’t realistically serve them all well, so I always say, “Don’t be everything to everyone, be something for someone.” The way you do that is to hone in on what your core customer, client or patient’s problems are and clearly show that you are the right company to solve it.

Here are some examples of how different companies handle that. First, Digital Marketer. These guys do digital marketing, which covers many areas but right on the front page of their site, as you scroll down, you can see that they are very clear on who they serve. Are you an individual, an entrepreneur or marketing professional? Or are you a team? Meaning a business owner, marketing executive or agency owner. Their solutions are different for each, so having the visitor select which they are, an individual or an agency, helps customize the content they’re going to see as they further engage in the site.

Another example is Mint. They bring the problems that somebody may be dealing with front and center. Right here, budgets? You betcha. Bills? Done. Credit score? Checked. It’s clear what they do and that they can provide a solution. If you answered yes to any of these problems then you know you’re in the right place.

The next example is Banana Republic. They sell clothing, so how do you customize the experience for a user who’s just looking for clothing? It’s simple, you just ask if they’re a man or a woman. Click the button and then what’s shown is going to be tailored to directly what the customer or the user wants to see.

These three sites are great examples of how to hone in on who each company serves and then customizing the content based on the problems or needs each visitor is looking for. Make sure that your homepage lists the problems that most people visiting are going to be challenged with. That way, they can quickly make a decision if they’re in the right place or not.
