Are you ready for some football? Hey everybody, Small Business Stacey here.

I love football. I’ve been watching it since I was a kid and the whole game of football has really taught me a lot about marketing. I’ve found that there’s really six things that contribute to a winning team whether that’s in football or your marketing. There’s a strategy, preparation, the basics, teamwork, execution, and measurement. Let’s talk about these really quickly.

See, if you’re going to have a winning team it all starts with strategy, marketing strategy, you’ve got to have a plan. So, just like coaches that are spending the time putting together their game plan you as a small business owner need to put together a marketing plan. How can you grow a successful and profitable business without a strategy? Get your marketing plan in place.

Number two, preparation. You never see a football team just show up on the field one day and start playing football. As a small business owner you need to be prepared. You’ve got to learn the tools of the trade and how you’re going to implement them and you do that by practicing, and testing, and making sure that you have the right preparation in place so that you can be successful.

Number three, the basics. When you watch a football game there’s really only two things they’re doing. It’s either a running game or a passing game, they’re just doing the basics, the same sort of plays over and over again. The same for your marketing, it’s not about doing a lot of things. Do a few things well, wash, later, rinse, repeat, stick to the basics of what’s working and you will be much more successful.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

Number four, teamwork. Football is not a one person game, neither is your marketing. You need to build a team around you. When you outsource your marketing to the Small Biz Marketing Specialists we have a team that supports your efforts and everybody works cohesively so that you’re getting your marketing done every single day.

Number five, execution. Look whether you’re playing football or marketing you’ve got to execute. It’s all about getting into action and in my book, “Small Business Marketing Made EZ“, I talk about the action marketing system. If you haven’t got your free copy yet go to SmallBizMarketingSpecialist.com/book. The point is you need to do something every single day. You need to be executing, getting your marketing into action.

And, number six is measurement. When you watch a football game you’ll hear them spew out lots of stats about this, and that, and the trivia, and it’s all about measurement, getting down to the last quarter yard. It’s the same in your marketing, you need to measure what’s working, what’s not, so that you can tweak. This actually falls into the I in my Action Marketing System, Invest. Understand your marketing metrics and it’s not about vanity metrics, it’s not about how many Facebook likes and Twitter followers you have. That’s not going to help you score okay. You only score in football when you get into the end zone or kick a field goal, maybe a safety. Anyways, I digress.

So, those are the six steps that in order to have a winning football team or a winning business you need to have in place, strategy, preparation, basics, teamwork, execution, and measurement. My challenge for you is what are you going to do to get these into place so that you can have a winning year. Leave me a comment below.
